FAQ - The Ruckus Society Camp Social Network Map

1. What is this?
2. What do the circles and the squares mean?
3. Why ain't I on here? (I was at the camp.)
4. What's the CIA doing on the map?

1. What is this?

The map was made by two pieces of software. The first, the 'Issue Crawler' by govcom.org, crawled the camp participants' web sites, captured the sites' outgoing links, and found all common outgoing links, and rendered them, together with the interlinkings between participant sites in a social network map using centrality spatialisation techniques. The second, 'Reseau-Lu' by aguidel.com, used spatial statistical analysis to show clusters in the social network. The web sites that appear on this map received two or more links from the following organisations:

2. What do the circles and the squares mean?

Large circles give many links to the network, rectangles give and receive links from within the network and small circles receive one or two links from the network.

3. Why ain't I on here? (I was at the camp.)

We ran the queries after the first day of the camp, and only those participants who put their names down on the "Who's Here?" sign-up sheet were entered into the software.

4. What's the CIA doing on the map?

Globalexchange.org and Squat.net link to them.
